What is radiofrequency ablation (RFA)?

RFA uses heat from radio waves to wound your nerves and block pain signals that run through your nerves. This minimally invasive procedure reduces or eliminates the pain signals from your nerves that would typically reach your brain, resulting in less pain.

RFA has helped more than 70% of patients who have tried it. Most patients experience significant relief, with results lasting an average of nine months to two years.

Am I a candidate for RFA?

RFA is a highly effective treatment if you’re suffering from chronic pain in your joints, neck, or lower back. When you visit Synchrony Medical Group, your provider evaluates your condition by considering where the pain is and how severe it is and asks you about other pain treatments you’ve used.

RFA has been used to treat painful conditions in different areas of the body, including:

  • Shoulders
  • Back
  • Pelvis
  • Hips
  • Knees

RFA can also help if you suffer from arthritis pain or peripheral nerve pain.

After a thorough consultation and exam, your Synchrony Medical Group provider determines if RFA is right for you.

What can I expect during RFA?

RFA is an outpatient procedure that takes just a few minutes, but when considering the preparation and proper aftercare, you could be at the office for several hours.

To ensure your comfort throughout the procedure, your Synchrony Medical Group provider numbs the treatment area with a local anesthetic. A fluoroscope takes X-ray images of the affected area to determine the exact spot requiring treatment.

Your provider then inserts a thin, hollow needle into the injured tissues. The fluoroscope monitors the procedure to ensure that the needle reaches the correct location. The radiofrequency wave then passes through the needle to destroy the nerve or nerves to stop them from sending pain signals to your brain.

Schedule an appointment with the Synchrony Medical Group team to see if RFA is right for you.

What are the benefits of RFA?

RFA is minimally invasive, making it a preferred method of treatment.

It also offers benefits that include:

  • No scarring
  • Quick recovery
  • Low risk of complications
  • No general anesthesia is needed
