What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Platelets in the blood allow it to clot properly. These platelets (cell fragments) in PRP also enhance tissue functioning by stimulating new cell production and healing.

PRP is a highly safe and effective treatment for many pain-causing conditions. It’s also useful for reducing common signs of aging, such as wrinkling and thinning hair.

What can PRP help treat?

Synchrony Medical Group offers PRP treatments to help treat the following conditions:

  • Wounds
  • Sports injuries
  • Work-related injuries
  • Car accident injuries
  • Slip and fall injuries
  • Pulled muscles
  • Ligament tears
  • Knee, ankle, shoulder, or elbow injuries
  • Tennis elbow
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Joint pain
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain

PRP stimulates the healing of injuries or diseases involving your muscles, ligaments, tendons, or joints.

Am I a candidate for PRP?

The Synchrony Medical Group team discusses your symptoms and medical history, completes a physical exam, and may order blood tests, X-rays, an MRI, a CT scan, or another imaging procedure. This helps to pinpoint the root cause of your symptoms and create an effective treatment plan.

What happens during PRP treatment?

Your pain management specialist first draws a sample of your blood and processes it in a centrifuge to separate the blood into its different components. This provides a concentrated source of platelets.

When the PRP is ready, your provider injects it into painful joints or other areas of your body containing tissue damage, swelling, or discomfort. You may receive multiple injections, depending on your diagnosis and the severity of your condition.

What should I expect after PRP injections?

Common temporary side effects after PRP treatment include tenderness, redness, or swelling at the site of the injections.

While you may not notice immediate improvements, PRP stimulates new cell growth over time. You can expect faster healing and less pain in the weeks and months following PRP treatment.

The Synchrony Medical Group team may recommend you complete a series of injections to maximize the outcome.

They might suggest additional treatments, such as bracing, ice or heat, other types of injections, or physical therapy. Follow up with your pain management specialist to ensure exceptional results and better quality of life.
