What is joint pain?

You have close to 400 joints in your body, ranging from large joints like your hips and shoulders to the small joints in your fingers and toes.

Joints allow you to move in different ways and carry out everything you do, from eating and dressing to working and playing with your children.

Joints are crucial, hardworking parts of your body. However, because they work so hard and are often under stress, they can also get injured and suffer from wear-and-tear.

What causes joint pain?

Common causes of joint pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Sprained ligaments
  • Strained tendons
  • Full and partial dislocations
  • Gout
  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Temporomandibular joint pain (in your jaw)

One of the most common causes of joint pain is osteoarthritis, a wear-and-tear form that typically affects you as you age. Given their frequent use, hips, knees, and hands are particularly vulnerable to osteoarthritis.

Arthritis also comes in many other forms, including autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. Gout is a form of arthritis that causes acute pain attacks, most often in the toe joints.

Other causes of joint pain may be associated with a particular joint. For example, rotator cuff tears, which often happen when the shoulder partially or fully dislocates, could cause shoulder pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome (a frequent cause of wrist pain) occurs when the median nerve in the arm comes under pressure.

Ankle, elbow, and knee pain often result from sports injuries like tennis elbow, ankle sprains, meniscus cartilage tears, and ligament ruptures.

How is joint pain treated?

The treatment methods that will work best for your joint pain depend on what’s causing it and how badly it affects you.

Keeping your joints moving is important with chronic pain; otherwise, you lose your range of motion more quickly, and your joints may even start to seize up.

Joint pain also benefits from physical therapies and massage and may require manual manipulation. Hydrotherapy is ideal for taking the weight off your joints.

Other joint pain treatments include:

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Steroid injections
  • Injections into the bursa inside the joint
  • Nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation

Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight to relieve joint stress, can also be highly effective in managing pain.
